Seaport Spark: Data Sonification Design Workshop

Now that you have heard the Singing Trees on Harbor Way, discover how to convert the power of plants into song.

Seaport Spark is partnering with PlantWave’s Joe Patitucci to bring you a Data Sonification Design Workshop on Monday September 26 at 6:30pm in District Hall (75 Northern Avenue, Boston MA 02210).

During this working session, you can expect to explore principles of design related to PlantWave: harmony, data resolution, and increasing expressiveness of output. Get into the plant music through hands-on exercises, creating musical instruments from MIDI notes and control mapping for dynamic compositions.

Joe Patitucci is an artist fostering connection to nature through sound, breath and technology. He’s best known for his pioneering work in plant music, a practice of data sonification where electrical impedance within plants is translated into sound. Joe has been sharing this work through sonic art installations at museums, festivals and public spaces around the world since 2012. As CEO of Data Garden, Joe is working to build a future where humans will have a real-time soundtrack to their lives generated from wearable data that is responsive to mood, tailored to taste and optimized for any activity.

This event will be equipment free at District Hall , however headphones are recommended for the hands-on portion. Musicians who use synthesizers or Ableton Live for music production are also encouraged to bring equipment and play along.
